Scenes such as the one above could soon become commonplace in our village if a planned Ruddington road safety initiative gets off the ground.
Ruddington Parish Council (RPC) is currently on the lookout for ‘Community Speed Watch’ volunteers to assist the police with tackling the problem of speeding vehicles at trouble-spots such as Loughborough Road (above), Wilford Road and Clifton Road, to name just three. It’s been an ongoing concern for many residents, and was even the focus of a meeting last year at the Ruddington Arms organised by our MP Ruth Edwards with representatives of Rushcliffe Police – who then stepped up their patrols and achieved some positive results. Now RPC wants to put together a small team of up to a dozen people to supplement officers’ good work.
Cllr Leo Lanzoni explains: “After some initial training by the Police on what to do, and how the equipment works, it is hoped that one Community Speed Watch session could take place each month. Each session is about an hour long and involves a team of 3 volunteers: so we think roughly 6 hours or so for each volunteer over a year. That’s a small commitment but could help make a big difference to road safety in our community.”
Cllr Lanzoni adds: “Speeding is a topic that is brought up often. Being a volunteer member of Community Speed Watch is an effective and important way for residents to help make our village safer.”
